How California Clubhouse Connects Members with Employment
How California Clubhouse Connects Members with Employment
Three months ago, Nicole* heard about the Clubhouse through her therapist. She visited and on her tour noticed a message board with a flyer on Transitional Employment. After a 3-month hiatus from work, she was looking for employment and a regular paycheck. With help from Steven, a staff generalist, she applied for the program and was hired by a local barber, in a paid part-time position as receptionist. Nicole has been working for 3 weeks now, M-F, 3 hours a day. “The atmosphere is vibrant. As soon as you walk in there’s music playing and barbers talking to customers.” she said. “My responsibilities include checking clients in, doing laundry, scheduling haircuts, and handling sales at the register. It’s a great environment.”
Transitional Employment is a core program of the Clubhouse model, and since 2015 members have been placed in jobs at local businesses including Walgreens, Rendezvous Cafe, Grand Leader Deli, Green Street Books, Bianchini’s Market, and now Peoples Barber and Shop.
The program offers members a pathway to employment and greater financial independence in the context of a supportive community. In partnership with local businesses, members are placed in 6-9 month entry-level positions to gain paid, real world, on-the job experience. The Clubhouse stays in close contact with local partners, offering support and advocacy to participating members, making sure that all employment laws are met, and even providing absence coverage to protect against job disruption.
