How Clubhouse Is Helping Members Return to Work

Marty’s Story: Making Progress on a Job Search
Marty previously worked at Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) as a warehouse employee and is actively looking for new employment opportunities where he can apply some of his skills. He told us,
“The Clubhouse has been a great deal of help with job hunting! With the way society is dependent on technology, I wouldn’t have known how to apply for jobs online if it wasn’t for the Clubhouse’s help. Although finding a job can be challenging nowadays, the Clubhouse has still supported and encouraged me to stay positive during the whole process.”
While Marty has been participating in our Work-Ordered Day, he’s been practicing for interviews, received a letter of reference from the Clubhouse for a new job opportunity, and has been accessing other resources to better understand how to plan for the future. Last week, for example, Marty shared, “I was able to join the Clubhouse for the DOR Social Security Webinar where they discussed how to navigate resources on their website which I found to be personally useful.”
It’s actually Marty’s 1 year anniversary with the Clubhouse this month! “I’ve been active in attending the Clubhouse whenever I can. I also go to Heart & Soul at the Friendship Center and they’ve been very supportive of me as well. What I enjoy the most is forming relationships with new people and connecting with the community!”
Nate’s Story: Finding Work at Goodwill
Nate worked side by side with staff member Steven in his job on the Business Unit and practiced interview skills in preparation for his job search. He was eventually hired at Goodwill and reports that it’s going well so far! “My role as a processor consists of sorting through donations and inspecting items so that they are ready to go for sale. I haven’t worked in quite a long time, so I’m definitely still learning the ropes and getting familiar with how the workplace operates––but all the staff have been kind.”
Nate also told us that the Clubhouse played a huge role in helping him land this job. “I didn’t know where to look but fortunately Goodwill is only a 10-minute walk from the Clubhouse and staff recommended that I apply. I’ve been unemployed for 10 years and sober for 2, so it was definitely a good feeling to put myself to work and be active. Housing is expensive especially in the Bay Area, but I want to be able to provide for myself and keep myself busy.”
Nate is active in his church, volunteers with a homeless ministry, and continues to work at the Clubhouse, accessing resources and staying connected. “One of the members is a teacher and was actually able to provide me the opportunity to get my GED which helped me find employment opportunities.”
The Clubhouse Helps Members Reach Employment Goals
What do Marty, Nate, and so many other Clubhouse members have in common? All live with mental health issues. All participate in Clubhouse Business or Hospitality Units during our Work-Ordered Day. Many take advantage of time with staff and other members to search for jobs, complete applications, and prepare for interviews. In a community that cares, members overcome hurdles and first steps towards employment––gaining self-confidence as they increase their employability.
